Where to stay in Alcossebre

Alcossebre (also spelt Alcocebre or Alcoceber) is the coastal village of the municipality of Alcalà de Xivert, in Castellón, on the Costa del Azahar. It is a destination for families and for people who come back: no high-rises, beaches separated by stretches of open coast, and the Sierra de Irta Natural Park closing the area to the south.

Booking here is straightforward if you answer in this order:

• Which type of accommodation fits your trip — apartment, hotel, aparthotel or campsite.
• Which area you want to be in — it changes the holiday more than the building itself.
• When you book — in August availability runs out sooner than people expect.

• Tourist apartment. The majority option in Alcossebre. Your own kitchen, a living room, several bedrooms and complete freedom over your schedule. Best value from a week upwards and with children. The trade-off: no reception and no daily cleaning.
• Hotel. Reception, daily cleaning, included services and zero admin. The best idea for two- or three-night breaks, or if you would rather not cook at all.
• Aparthotel. The middle ground: an apartment with a kitchen, but hotel services behind it. A good answer for families who want independence without giving up a reception desk.
• Campsite. Caravan, motorhome or bungalow, with the best value and direct contact with the outdoors. There are beachside and inland campsites, next to the Sierra de Irta.

Rule of thumb: under three nights, hotel; a week or more with family, apartment. If you are torn between the two, aparthotel.

They are the destination’s hallmark. The local agency Casa Azahar manages a catalogue of 40 apartments spread across every area, and these are the real numbers, useful for calibrating expectations:

• 11 are beachfront — in the centre (Cargador), Las Fuentes and Playa Romana.
• 20 state sea views, and only 8 are both things: being on the seafront is about the building, seeing the sea is about the apartment.
• 33 have a pool: it is close to standard.
• 22 have air conditioning and 26 confirm Wi-Fi.
• 11 have three bedrooms, for a large family or two families.
• 15 have parking, which is now the scarcest item on this list and the one that weighs most if you are driving in high season.

One warning about these figures, because it changes how to read them: they come from the listings the agency itself publishes, and 6 of the 40 have no listing there. For those six, an amenity that does not appear means “not stated”, not “not available”. We would rather leave an apartment out of a list than claim something about it we cannot verify.

Alcossebre has hotels by the sea and an aparthotel right by the beach. They are the natural option for short breaks, for trips without a car, and for anyone who prefers to pay once and stop thinking: reception, cleaning and services included. The aparthotel deserves a separate mention because it solves the most common dilemma: you want the kitchen and space of an apartment, but you also want someone at reception if something goes wrong. Alcossebre Sea Experience is the reference aparthotel, also right on the beachfront.

There are campsites nearby, both beachside and inland, close to the Sierra de Irta Natural Park. They offer the best value in the destination and are the obvious choice if you travel by caravan or motorhome. They usually have bungalows too, for anyone who wants the campsite atmosphere without sleeping in a tent.

This is the decision most people underestimate. Alcossebre is not a single beach: it is five areas in a row along the coast, and the experience changes a lot from one to the next.

• Town centre and Cargador beach — everything on foot, no car needed.
• Las Fuentes — marina, atmosphere and the largest choice of apartments.
• Playa Romana — family calm and a long seafront.
• Tres Playas — quiet, with the beach about 550 metres away.
• Sierra de Irta — coves, trails and a car you cannot do without.
• Guest house, hostal or casa rural. The cheapest and least visible part of the municipality: six small establishments, and only two of them are in Alcossebre — the other four are in Alcalà de Xivert, ten minutes from the beach. You book by phone: none has a booking engine.

Alcossebre has a sharply defined season, and that shows in availability more than in anything else:

• July and August are high season. August is the busiest month, and beachfront apartments and those with air conditioning are the first to go: if you are travelling in August, do not leave it until June.
• Easter week and long weekends pack a lot of demand into a few days. Book as soon as you have your dates.
• June and September offer the best balance of weather and calm: the sea is still warm in September and the beaches are far emptier.
• Local festivals tighten availability on specific dates; check them in the Alcossebre events calendar before fixing your days.
