What changes once August ends
Alcossebre has a sharply defined season, which means that outside July and August the village works differently. Three changes you notice on day one:
- The beaches empty out. The coastline runs over 10 km and the beaches are wide; in September that means front-row sand at any time of day.
- Parking stops being a problem. The paid zone in the centre only operates at Easter and from 15 June to 30 September. The rest of the year those same streets are free. Details in the parking guide.
- There is availability. The apartments that sell out months ahead in August — the beachfront ones, the ones with air conditioning — are free.
September: the best balance of the year
If we had to pick one month, it would be September. The Mediterranean holds much of the heat it built up over the summer, so the water stays warm well after the air starts to soften: it is the month when you can still swim with half-empty beaches.
The paid parking zone also runs until 30 September, a sign the village is still going: restaurants open, services running and some atmosphere — without the August queues.
For actual air and sea temperatures, see the Weather page, which carries the AEMET forecast and the water temperature.
October and autumn: hiking and coves
When swimming stops being the main plan, Alcossebre wins on another front: the Sierra de Irta Natural Park. It is one of the last stretches of unspoilt coastline in the Mediterranean, with seaside trails, coves such as Cala Blanca and Cala Mundina and routes running out to the lighthouse. Walking there in August is hard work; in October it is the best thing in town.
The promenade changes function too: flat and continuous, it links Playa Romana, Cargador beach and the centre, and in autumn it becomes the daily walk of anyone here to rest. Routes in the nature guide and the day trips.
Spring: the destination wakes up
Spring is the other good window. The weather already works for both beach and hiking, and the local calendar fills up: the town’s festivals and events are listed in the Alcossebre events calendar.
Two practical warnings for spring: the paid parking zone is active at Easter (it is not only a summer thing), and the circular urban bus line, launched precisely at Easter 2026, runs in the busiest periods — outside them, check timetables on alcossebre.org before relying on it.
Which accommodation to choose out of season
Outside July and August your priorities change when picking an apartment, and that opens up options:
- Air conditioning stops ruling. Only 4 of the 24 apartments in the local catalogue have it, and in August they go first. Out of season you can drop that filter and keep the other criteria.
- Parking loses its urgency (the street is free), so the parking comparison becomes a convenience rather than a need.
- Location matters more. With fewer places open and shorter days, being in the centre or on the promenade counts for more: see the near the centre comparison.
And if the plan is a long stay or remote work, an apartment with a kitchen is what makes sense: we explain it in the accommodation guide, and the choice of area in the areas guide.
Getting here and around without summer
The logistics do not change with the season: AP-7 exit 44 (now toll-free) and the N-340 by car, the Alcalà de Xivert train station about 8 km away on the Valencia–Castellón–Vinaròs line, and the Alcalà–Alcossebre bus with 6 daily services timed with the trains. All detailed in how to get here and getting around.
What is worth checking is the circular urban bus, which concentrates on high season. Outside it, the promenade on foot is still the best way to move between beaches.
And for a short trip, the day trips from Alcossebre work even better out of season: Peñíscola, Morella or the Ebro Delta without queues or heat.
Frequently asked questions
- Which is the best month to visit Alcossebre without crowds?
- September. The sea keeps the summer’s warmth, the village is still going until 30 September and the beaches are far emptier than in August.
- Do I have to pay for parking in October?
- No. The paid zone only operates at Easter and from 15 June to 30 September. The rest of the year those streets are free.
- Can you swim in Alcossebre in September?
- Yes, it is normal: the Mediterranean holds much of the heat it built up over the summer. For the actual water temperature, see the Weather page, which carries AEMET data.
- What is there to do in Alcossebre in autumn and winter?
- Hiking and coves in the Sierra de Irta Natural Park (Cala Blanca, Cala Mundina, the route to the lighthouse), the promenade, food and the local festival calendar.

- The circular urban line concentrates on the busiest periods. Check timetables and stops on alcossebre.org before relying on it out of season.
