Sierra de Irta junto al mar, plan de un día en Alcossebre

Short breaks

Short breaks in Alcossebre

Alcossebre works very well in short form: beach, promenade and the Sierra de Irta all fit into a weekend, and getting here is quick. These are the decisions that make the difference.

When: Easter, long weekends and weekends

Easter week is the real start of the season in Alcossebre: it is when the village gets going, and also when demand concentrates into very few days. The same goes for long weekends and for weekends in spring and early autumn.

The practical consequence: on a short break, availability matters more than price. Book as soon as you have your dates, because three or four separate nights over a long weekend are the first thing to sell out.

If you want dates with fewer people, a weekend in September or October is the best play: we develop this in the Alcossebre out of season guide. And to avoid — or deliberately catch — the local festivals, see the events calendar.

Warning: the paid parking zone DOES operate at Easter

This is the most common mistake among people coming for just a few days. The paid zone in the centre is active at Easter, not only in summer: 11:00–14:00 and 16:00–22:00, with a maximum of 2 hours per stay. Outside those hours it is free.

For a three-day break, the 2-hour limit is awkward: either stay somewhere you can leave the car parked, or rely on the free areas in the residential developments. Full detail (rates, streets and payment app) in the parking guide.

The good news: since 2026 there is a circular urban bus line — launched precisely at Easter — linking the centre with the beaches and the residential areas. Leave the car and take the bus: timetables and stops on alcossebre.org and in the getting around guide.

Which accommodation for 2-4 nights

On short stays the rule flips compared with summer:

  • For two or three nights, a hotel or the aparthotel is usually the better idea: reception, daily cleaning and zero admin. Setting up a household for 48 hours is not worth it.
  • For four nights or more, or travelling as a family, the apartment wins again: kitchen, space and free schedules.

Above all: on a short break location matters twice as much, because time is short and you do not want to spend it driving. Staying in the centre, by Cargador beach, puts shops, restaurants and sand at street level. The town-centre ones are gathered in the near the centre comparison, and the choice of area is explained in the areas guide.

The comparison between accommodation types, in more detail, is in the accommodation guide.

A weekend well spent

Two full days fit the essentials without rushing:

  • Day 1 — the sea. Cargador beach or Playa Romana in the morning, and the promenade in the afternoon: flat and continuous, it links Playa Romana, Cargador and the centre, and northwards reaches Las Fuentes and the marina. Almost everything is under 20 minutes on foot.
  • Day 2 — the Sierra de Irta. The Natural Park holds one of the last stretches of unspoilt coastline in the Mediterranean: seaside trails, Cala Blanca and Cala Mundina, and the route to the lighthouse. This is what sets Alcossebre apart from any other coastal town.

The beaches one by one are in the beach guide; the routes in the nature guide. And for eating, the food guide.

Day trips that fit a short break

If the break runs three or four days, a half-day outing fits without breaking the plan: Peñíscola and its castle, walled Morella, or the much closer Alcalà de Xivert castle and the Santa Lucía hermitage. They are all in the day trips from Alcossebre guide, and the town’s own landmarks in what to see.

A tip: save the day trip for whichever day has the worse sea or forecast, and keep the good weather for the beach and the hills.

Getting here fast

On a short break, travel time counts. By car, AP-7 exit 44 (now toll-free), then the N-340 and CV-142. By train, Alcalà de Xivert station is about 8 km away on the Valencia–Castellón–Vinaròs line, and the Alcalà–Alcossebre bus runs 6 daily services timed with the trains: coming without a car works perfectly well. Castellón airport is about 24 km away.

All the options, with links to timetables, in the how to get to Alcossebre guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for Alcossebre?
A full weekend covers beach, promenade and a walk in the Sierra de Irta. With three or four days you can add a day trip to Peñíscola or Morella.
Do you have to pay for parking at Easter?
Yes. The paid zone in the centre is active at Easter, 11:00–14:00 and 16:00–22:00, with a maximum of 2 hours. Outside those hours parking is free.
Hotel or apartment for a weekend?
For two or three nights, hotel or aparthotel: reception, cleaning and nothing to organise. From four nights, or travelling as a family, the apartment works out better.
Can you visit Alcossebre for a weekend without a car?
Yes. Train to Alcalà de Xivert (8 km away) and the Alcalà–Alcossebre bus, with 6 daily services timed with the trains. Once there, the promenade and the circular urban bus cover the rest.
Which area suits a short break?
The centre, by Cargador beach: shops, restaurants and sand at street level, and no dependence on a car when time is short.
When are there fewest people for a short break?
Weekends in September and October, and spring outside Easter week. From October the paid parking zone also stops operating, so parking is free.
