Sierra de Irta Natural Park: Untouched Nature by the Sea

The Serra d'Irta Natural Park is one of the most valuable protected areas in the Valencian Community and one of the few places in the whole of Europe where the Mediterranean mountains reach the sea directly, with no urban interruption. Declared a Natural Park in 2002, it protects more than 12,000 hectares of pristine nature between the municipalities of Alcalá de Xivert and Peñíscola, with Alcocebre (Alcossebre) as its main gateway.

Why is the Sierra de Irta Natural Park Unique?

• 🌊 A one-of-a-kind pristine coastline: It is the only stretch of coast in the Valencian Community with no development at all between the mountains and the sea.
• 🦅 Exceptional biodiversity: Home to more than 200 bird species, including Bonelli's eagle, the peregrine falcon and Audouin's gull.
• 🐐 Land fauna: Iberian ibex, badger, genet, fox and a multitude of Mediterranean reptiles.
• 🌿 Mediterranean flora: Pine forest, garrigue scrubland, native dwarf fan palm, rosemary and a multitude of endemic aromatic plants.
• 🏰 Historical heritage: Medieval watchtowers (Torre Badum, Torre Renegà), coastal lagoons and archaeological remains.

🥾 Hiking and Walking Trails

🤿 Diving and Snorkelling

🏖️ Unspoilt Coves

Within the park are some of the most spectacular and unspoilt beaches in the whole Mediterranean: Cala Mundina, Cala Blanca, Cala Ribamar and Cala Argilaga. Accessible only on foot or by boat.

Park Access Information

• Main access: From Alcocebre, along the track that starts next to the Puerto Deportivo de Las Fuentes marina.
• Vehicles: Access is only permitted on foot, by bike or on horseback. Motor vehicles are not allowed.
• Visitor centre: Park information is available at the Puerto Deportivo de Las Fuentes marina.
• Dogs: Allowed on a leash.
