Where to buy food in Alcossebre

Four in the centre of Alcossebre, one in the south next to the Playa Tropicana campsite and one in Alcalà de Xivert. The big one is Consum, the only one with its own large car park; the rest are walkable.

  On the main street of the village, recently refurbished, with staffed butcher and deli counters and cheeses and cured meats from the province. Walkable from almost anywhere in town.

In August they are all packed in the late afternoon. Shop in the morning if you can.

  A hearth oven in the centre: rustic loaves, seeded breads and local sweets such as pastissets. It has a second shop in Alcalà, on Calle San Pascual.

The fish does not come from a local auction — Alcossebre has none — but from Peñíscola and Vinaròs, half an hour away. This is the shopping worth getting up early for.

This is where the local produce shows up: tomata de penjar (hanging tomato), oranges and mandarins from the fields around the village, and vegetables from the Baix Maestrat market gardens.

All three are in Alcalà de Xivert, and all three make their own charcuterie: longaniza, onion blood sausage, chorizo and butifarra. Worth the seven-kilometre drive if a barbecue is on the cards.

Besides the shops there is a street market: in Alcalà de Xivert on Fridays from 9am to 1pm, and in Alcossebre on Tuesdays from 4pm to 10pm from June to September, on the seafront promenade. Opening times and the other practical services are in the services guide.
