Eat every dot in the maze and dodge the four ghosts. A tribute to Atari Pac-Man, free in your browser and on your phone.
Guide the muncher round the maze and eat every dot. The big power pills in the corners scare the ghosts for a few seconds: while they are blue you can eat them, and each one is worth double the last. If a ghost touches you, you lose a life.
Pac-Man was born in Japan in 1980 as an arcade machine by Namco, created by Toru Iwatani. Instead of another space shooter, it offered something new: a round character moving through a maze, eating dots while four ghosts chase it.
Each ghost in the original had its own way of hunting the player, and those “personalities” are what make the game more than reflexes: one comes straight for you, another tries to cut you off, and two more switch between closing in and backing off. The power pills turn the chase around for a few seconds.
In 1982 the home version for the Atari 2600 arrived. It was widely criticised for its differences from the arcade game, especially the flickering ghosts, yet it was one of the console’s best-selling cartridges, with more than seven million copies, and it brought the game into millions of homes.
This is an original implementation with its own maze and four ghosts that behave differently: one chases you, one heads for where you are going, one works out a position between the two, and the last switches between closing in and running away. The controls are built for phones: swipe over the maze or use the D-pad.
