Move along the floor and fire the harpoon upwards. Every balloon you hit splits into two smaller ones until the tiny ones vanish. If a balloon touches you, you lose a life. Climb the ladders, break the orange blocks and pick up items: double wire, power wire, vulcan gun, shield, clock, hourglass and dynamite. Each stage has a time limit.
Pang is a 1989 arcade game by Japan’s Mitchell Corporation. In Japan it was called Pomping World, and in the United States Capcom released it as Buster Bros. One or two players travel the world, from Mount Fuji to Easter Island, popping balloons with a harpoon.
The idea is as simple as it is addictive: the balloons never stop bouncing, and every shot splits them into two smaller, faster ones. Firing blindly fills the screen with balloons; the skill lies in choosing which one to burst and when.
It was followed by Super Pang (1990), with an endless survival mode, and Pang! 3 (1995), plus versions for the Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum and, later, consoles and phones.
This is an original implementation with twelve stages drawn in code: Mount Fuji, Guilin, Angkor Wat, the Taj Mahal, Paris, London, Barcelona, Athens and, as the final stop, Alcossebre, with its beach and lighthouse. It has balloons in four sizes, platforms, breakable blocks, ladders, power-ups and a bonus for the time left. After the last stage the tour starts again, faster.
