The Patron Saint Festivities of Alcossebre and Alcalà de Xivert

The municipality of Alcalà de Xivert-Alcossebre celebrates its patron saint festivities in honour of Sant Joan Baptista i al Sagrat Cor de Jesús. First, at the end of August, the festive atmosphere is lived in the town of Alcalà de Xivert; then, in early September, it's the turn of Alcossebre, which bids farewell to summer with its own big festive week.

What happens during the fiestas

These are street fiestas, family-friendly and highly participative. Among the most common events you'll find:

• Bous al carrer (bull with fireballs, young cows and cattle-breeder exhibitions), one of the most deeply rooted traditions.
• Verbenas and orchestras at night, with concerts and DJ sets in the marquee area.
• Children's activities: playgrounds, foam parties and “alternative” bulls for the little ones.
• Popular gastronomy: paella contest, sardine feast and tastings in the marquees.
• Sport and tradition: hiking marches, tournaments and religious events.
• Fireworks display as the grand finale of the fiestas.
