Activity ideas for two-year-olds

• The play library (ludoteca) in Alcoceber offers picture books, children's music and a space for drawing. At this age (around 2 years old) it's a good time to start with building games such as Lego, which are very useful for developing all kinds of mental skills; Meccano and Lego sets are the best known. Train circuits, paper cut-outs, playdough, toy tool sets and craft activities such as making a necklace or belt from beads are also recommended.
• In Alcocebre you can enjoy all kinds of water games. Teach your child to fill a large bucket using several small ones.
• You can also start with symbolic play: reproducing the adult world and its behaviour, using real objects (putting a dummy on daddy, helping mummy wash the dishes, and so on). From around 4-5 years old, on top of copying reality, children start inventing their own story. From age 6, the story a child invents becomes a real story of their own.
• In Alcoceber you can play "I Spy". Choose specific objects that you are sure your child already knows the word for.
• From time to time, point out names and related words: square, rectangle, triangle, and so on.
• Ask your child to find square shapes, or shapes that look like squares, and also round shapes.
• Sort by shape: place two pieces of each shape in a small pile on the table. Start with two shapes and increase to three and four, making sure the colours are the same for every size. This activity can be extended to sorting cups and saucers, spoons and forks, and so on.
• Use an abacus with thick rows of beads. Start by counting to 3, then to 5, and finally up to ten.
• Count objects: fingers, pencils, toys, and so on (first up to 3, then up to 5, and later up to 10).
• Teach your child to hold a pencil (the motor skills for this appear at around two and a half years old) and start tracing vertical and horizontal lines, little by little.
• Playdough activities, including forming words with playdough.
• Ask your child the names of everyday objects around the house.
• Build towers with wooden blocks.
• Ask your child about colours often.
• Cutting with scissors: from around age 3, a child can start making cuts with special child-safe scissors (without a point). You will need to help them cut out shapes, as they will not yet be able to cut round shapes on their own.
• Sort forks and spoons (three of each).
• Let your child help you set the table.
